Summary
"December, 1904. Jemima Pitt, now twenty-two, agrees to act as a "suitable companion" to her friend Delphinia, who is traveling to New York to be married to Brent Albright, toast of New York high society. Jemima is excited about the prospect of a Christmas adventure in a strange big city, but little does she expect to be enlisted on a top secret mission by Brent's brother Harley, to track down Delphinia's estranged mother. After some detective work and a little luck, they manage to locate her lodgings--but to their horror, they find Maria dead. Truly her parents' daughter, Jemima is determined to unmask the killer, and enlists the aid of handsome young police officer Patrick Flannery to do it. And along the way she comes to learn an important lesson about staying true to oneself, no matter the cost. Once again, as only she can, Perry delivers a darkly suspenseful, ultimately heart-warming novel that truly captures the essence of the holiday spirit"--

Review
/* Starred Review */ Charlotte and Thomas Pitt's 23-year-old daughter, Jemima, stars in Perry's 12th Victorian Christmas mystery (A Christmas Hope ). Jemima is chaperoning wealthy Phinnie Cardew from London to New York City, where Phinnie will be marrying Brent Albright, a son of her father's business partner. The Albrights are wealthy, powerful, and very concerned about society's opinion. When Brent's older brother, Harley, suspects that Phinnie's disreputable mother, Marie, may be in New York and planning on making an unpleasant surprise appearance at the wedding, he enlists Jemima to persuade Marie not to attend. Instead, Jemima finds a dead woman stabbed in her bed, and the circumstances lead policeman Patrick Flannery to arrest her. As soon as Jemima is out on bail, she starts investigating and trying to prove her innocence, encountering many secrets and unexpected allies while she searches for the killer. VERDICT Perry writes a thoroughly enjoyable mystery set against the wonderful historical backdrop of 1904 New York City at Christmastime. --Melissa DeWild (Reviewed October 15, 2014) (Library Journal, vol 139, issue 17, p85)
