Summary
In April 1852, Mazy Bacon's husband, Jeremy, sells their farm, buys a wagon and some cattle, announces that they are heading West, and invites her mother along for the ride. A shocked Mazy has no choice but to follow and hope God will hear her pleas to return home. As the small family journeys westward and joins a wagon train heading for the Oregon Territory, the strengths and weaknesses of each person are dragged glaringly into the spotlight

Review
  • /*Starred Review*/In Kirkpatrick's All Together in One Place, Mazy Bacon comes kicking and screaming along on the Oregon Trail when her husband, Jeremy, sells their Wisconsin farm. Eventually, the two reconcile, but this tempestuous marriage forms the heart of Kirkpatrick's by turns tender and brutal look at how it must really have been to head West in 1850, under threat of Indian attack, treachery from other pioneers, and the unrelenting weather. Kirkpatrick insists on real characters: fallible men, headstrong women. There's the romantic Tyrell, who quickens the pulse of young girls, and the stridently independent Ruth Martin, who might be a contemporary woman. Romances wax and wane. Children get sick, and there isn't enough to eat. There's mud everywhere. But faith, subtly and genuinely evoked in the award-winning Kirkpatrick's hands, brings the pioneers all together in one place. ((Reviewed June 1 & 15, 2000)) -- John Mort
  • Rendezvous Review: Jeremy Beacon's homecoming changes into disaster when the brute cow he brings home spooks and injures his wife, Mazy. It was a blessing his mother-in-law returned with him. Mazy thought the pain of her injuries were unbearable, but nothing compared with the pain she suffers when Jeremy tells her, he has sold their beloved farm to follow his dream of owning a dairy farm in Oregon. Uprooted from her home, Mazy tries to convince Jeremy to return to Wisconsin, but she only finds peace when she leaves her future in God's hands. Ms. Kirkpatrick's ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE is a heart warming story about ordinary folks who faced their fears and buried their uncertainties to make the perilous journey to Oregon. Men are naturally adventurous, but it took strong women of faith and vision to follow them into the unknown. Mary Thompson
