Summary
While a number of counties recruited no companies of artillery, Monroe County produced three separate batteries. The first, commanded by Captain William Lowry, was formed in the summer of 1861. Attached to Wise Legion, Lowry's Battery spent the first six months of the war in the Kanawha Valley and in Southwest Virginia. In 1862 the battery moved east and aided in the defense of the North Carolina coastline
