Summary
This family saga spans six decades, beginning in 1952, transports readers from Afghanistan to France, Greece, and the United States. Several disparate characters tell his or her version of the same story of selfishness and selflessness, acceptance and forgiveness and love. Abdullah and his sister, Pari, live with their father and step-mother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters.
