- A Chicago insurance magnate solicits itinerant trader Owen Graves to travel to the South Seas in 1897 to bring back a selection of weapons and handicrafts from the islands of Melanesia, along with several natives to be put on exhibit, and Graves convinces English-speaking Argus Nui and his sister Malini to return with him to the U.S., where the islanders find themselves forced into living a parody of native life
