Summary
Hedda Gabler, daughter of an aristocratic General, has just returned from her honeymoon with George Tesman, an aspiring young academic, reliable but not brilliant, who has combined research with their honeymoon. She has married him for security, but the reappearance of his academic rival, Eilert Lovborg, throws their lives into disarray. Tesman believes Lovborg outshines him as an author, and may win the university professorship he had been counting on. When Tesman finds the manuscript of Lovborg's new work, Hedda--out of boredom, ambition, or both--begins to scheme, but her machinations have unforeseen consequences
