He is invited to join the Pharisees, which brings an opportunity to elevate the family's status-- though some aspects of the lifestyle come contrary to what Pheodora has been taught. When her husband is thrown into debtors' prison, she must pin her hopes on the birth of two spotless goats to sell for the upcoming Yom Kippur sacrifice so that she can provide for her daughters.
