It was Hitler's last gamble. Codenamed Herbstnebel--"Autumn Mist"--The operation was a massive counter-offensive involving half a million German soldiers in an attempt to recapture Antwerp, encircle the four Allied armies, and force a treaty that would allow Hitler to turn his attention to the Eastern front. Planned in complete secrecy and playing out between December 16, 1944 and January 15, 1945, the Battle of the Bulge, as it has come to be known, was ultimately the bloodiest battle fought by U.S. forces in World War II, and indeed the largest land battle in American history. Fighting amid freezing temperatures, deep snow, and dense fog, some 89,000 of the 610,000 American servicemen committed to the campaign were wounded or killed. The legacies of Bastogne and Malmedy--heroism and horror--continue to reverberate in the imagination of generations.-- From cover
