Summary

In 1809 Lieutenant Sharpe and his riflemen are in Portugal, preparing for Napoleon's next strike. The much smaller English force will probably pull out before it gets slaughtered -- but not Sharpe. His orders are clear. He must find the missing daughter of an English wine shipper. Suddenly, the punishing French assault is launched. Now Sharpe and his men are trapped behind enemy lines, and they have only just begun their mission
