Summary
For Joanne, a young American girl living with her grandparents in Holland during World War II, the war seems worlds away. But when the Germans start crossing over the border, and her mother is killed in Rotterdam, Joanne is thrown headlong into the restrictions and rules of Nazi occupation. Forced to give up her room to quarter a German officer, it seems that normalcy is far out of reach. Joanne finally reaches her breaking point when it appears that the Little Riders, a group of statues in the town clock that are loved by the local villagers, may become the next victims of war
