Summary
Shuttling in time, Wilma Dykeman attempts to contain the history of a family during one dramatic weekend in which one member is suspected of murder. She also exploits the novel of revelation in which the innocent is plunged into scenes of local poverty. The Thurstons come from a small town in Appalachia (apparently Kentucky) but they are now scattered all over- Paris, Washington, Connecticut, etc. The family faces its "crisis of survival" when middle-aged Clay Thurston, a loudmouthed alcoholic, is suspected of murdering a Negro during a drunken hunting trip. The racial aspect is especially inauspicious for Senator Philip Cortland, who is a Thurston, and may be accused of using his influence to retrieve a relative from a tender legal situation.(Kirkus Reviews, March 1, 1965)
