Summary
The novel is based on the life of Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne (c.1126-1196). Yet Ermengarde is a woman out of time, as easily imaginable negotiating hostile takeovers in today's corporate boardrooms as inhabiting her court in twelfth-century feudal France. Like women of today, she struggles to assert herself while maintaining her femininity. She copes with animosity from her allies and unsolicited attentions from one of her knights. When her city is about to be sacked, she sets aside the advice of others to act on her own
